Magnificent Mangroves in Puerto Princesa, Palawan. Philippines, 2007. Discovering shells in these places is a dream...

The incredible World of Seashells...

Of all the living beings existing in the Universe, Sea Shells are certainly among the most spectacular living forms in nature. The beauty and stunning architecture of shells goes beyond Human understanding... It is not just a set of incredible natural facts, it is something more sublime and divine. Something that fills us with pleasure, in the subtlety of perfection, of the almost impossible thing to be more perfect... I have been collecting shells for over 30 years and still today I am as dazzled with the natural beauty of shells as at the beginning of my collection...

In nature, many animals have bizarre shapes, bright colors, or varied ornaments, whose purpose is most often related to sexual attraction between individuals of the same species to perpetuate their genes, or in the case of flowers, to attract insects that promote pollination. In shells, these fantastic characteristics are simply gratuitous, or at least that's how it seems... these subtleties don't seem to fit the purpose or objective that other species have... Most molluscs have very poor vision, some of them live in cavernous zones or in depths where light is almost or completely non-existent.

Many other species spend most of their lives buried in sand or muddy zones, where activity related to alimentation or mating is almost always nocturnal. Most species live in more exposed zones and with daytime activity, are completely camouflaged with limestone encrustations, or encrusted by various living organisms, which generally completely surround the shell. Theoretically, in the nature of everything that exists, there is a purpose... nature does not waste energy in creating subjectivities, that does not have a concrete objective. Some species of marine shells seem to challenge this theory totally...

Whether for these or other facts, the question I have been asking myself since I started collecting shells, » Why all these shapes and colors, in shells...?
The science of Malacology, in these last decades in relation to Molluscs, has advanced more quickly than in the last centuries, since the first discoveries and the beginning of the ordering of the Phylum of Species. Even so, many and many questions are still to be deciphered about the incredible life and evolution of Mollusks. Shells are true natural sculptures of unique beauty in the inflorescence of life, who have always exercised and will continue to exercise a great attraction and fascination on Man...

My collection, my history...

The seashells have amazed us all since ancient times. Its curious shapes, bright colors and spectacular species, put them among the most fascinating creations of nature. Live jewels from the seas all over the world, possessing unique characteristics that make them a pleasant object of study and collecting...

My fascination with shells was born more than 30 years ago, transforming me since then into a specialized collector, in inexhaustible hours of pleasure in the preparation and conservation of the shells, or simply in their cataloguing.

The sea shells have been part of my life for a long time...
The pleasure of collecting shells and fossils, which initially was a simple hobby of collecting, later also became part of my family business. Today, I dedicate part of my time to these two themes, with the greatest dedication.
The trips have come with the time and with the desire to know personally the places where they originate the most species of shells, which I have in my collection.
The first shell that I acquired was bought in the first and big mall, which opened in Portugal (Amoreiras Shopping Center), inaugurated on September 27-1985. The buy was a small
Conus Virgo, from the Mozambique. Since then, I've never stopped collecting...

...This fascination and passion for shells also took me to travel, to discover the pleasure of personally catch some of these wonderful species of the seas » Philippines, 2007  » India, 2009 » Thailand, 2011 » India, 2016 » Japan, 2017 » Malaysia and Singapore, 2019
In these places , I plunged into the idyllic waters of the Pacific and Indian, among the corals, or the tangle of the roots of the Mangues, where I caught numerous specimens of shells.

Informations:
I also leave the message to future collectors and those who have long been engaged in malacology, who are awareness of the preservation of  the species and their natural habitat, not collecting more specimens of the various species, than those that are necessary to have a pleasantly beautiful collection of pedagogical interest.

Soon on the pages at » MolluscaBase - Shells of the World «, you will be able to enjoy several galleries with beautiful photos of the most representative families of the Gastropoda and Bivalvia classes. Some of the most beautiful specimens of the many existing species, highly appreciated by collectors around the World...

More than 20 years collecting and collector fossils

After shell collecting, fossils inevitably came almost by spontaneous drag... initially with fossils of » Marine Invertebrates (Molluscs, Echinoderms, Crustaceans and others), » Marine Vertebrates and Amphibians (Shark teeth, Reptiles, Turtles, Fish and others). Later, » Terrestrial Vertebrates (Upper Jurassic Dinosaur Fossils).

Both collections (Shells and Fossils) are part of my life. The collecting hobby soon turned into a passion and continuous work. Whether in the maintenance and preparation of both collections, either in the management and selection of some items to sell on my website. Selling some of these items, even with some suffering, has allowed me to dedicate my time to doing what I know how to do well and what I like to do...

Clypeaster laganoides MARVEL (Agassiz). Miocene. Portugal, 2001

The fossils of my collection are practically all from Portugal, caught and prepared by me. Through this years I already have many hundreds of hours in the field, including many good and bad adventures, because discovering and extracting fossils from rocks is not always easy... depending on the terrain or meteorological conditions, collecting fossils is not an easy task activity accessible to most people. Even with all the experience I have of walking in difficult areas, I have had some accidents and big scares...

Preparing fossils is an activity with less physical risk, but still very laborious and requires great patience, requiring good tools and depending on the fossils to be prepared, many and many hours of hard work. On the page » Fossil Topics «, I explain in more detail the preparation process and fossil collection places, with several and beautiful images.

Informations:
When possible, I will create a photo gallery of the fossils of my collection (fossils from Portugal). It won't be as complete work, not so extensive as the Marine Shell Database. The photo gallery will be made up of a few dozen good photos of my fossils and accompanied by the corresponding classification legend. This will be my future contribution, to everyone who likes fossils...
