Seashells of Portugal
New objective of dragoshells-jp: J.P Oliveira Internet Guide to Marine to Shells.
The objective is to create a MolluscaBase, with 1000 specimens... With time, I will be able to expand that number to 1000 species... All shells presented in MolluscaBase are part of my private collection. All photos of the shells are also my authorship.

My family collecting shells. Sesimbra, Praia do Cavalo. Portugal, 2015
This page is dedicated to the topic of collecting Portuguese Marine Shells. The objective of this topic is to disseminate our vast and rich marine mollusc fauna, as well as to contribute to a better understanding of the meaning and importance of Malacology in Portugal. Personally, I am a Conchologist specializing in collecting seashells for over 30 years. Malacology is the scientific area that delves into the science of studying Molluscs, an area in which I only have some basic knowledge. My daughter, who is a Marine Biologist, perhaps one day will become a family expert in this area of Malacology...
All photos of the specimens presented here are from my private collection (J.P. Oliveira), collected over several years, from north to south of the coast of Portugal. Some of the rarer species, or those from deep waters and difficult to obtain, were bought or kindly provided by local fishermen. Thanks, everyone...
Note: Message to future collectors and to everyone else who has taken up shell collecting over the years. As a rule, always respect the conservation of specimens and the natural habitat, not collecting more specimens than necessary to have a pleasant, beautiful collection snf scientific interest.

King D. Carlos de Bragança
(1863 and 1908)
King D. Carlos de Bragança was the great pioneer of Oceanography in Portugal and the world, adopting and improvising research devices and chemical formulas of his own creation. He systematically harvested a wide range of marine species, including many species of molluscs along the Portuguese coast, between the abyssal and the coast. Much of the current knowledge of Portuguese Oceanography is due to him...

Then, Professor Augusto Nobre (1865-1946), naturalist and university professor, devoted valuable studies to the malacological fauna of Portugal. He took care to compile information on shells collected by foreign oceanographic ships that traveled along our coasts, during the time of King D. Carlos, in addition to several harvests that he himself carried out on the coast. The publications of his works on malacological fauna led to the identification of around 1200 species, currently more than 1600 are known in Portugal.
Currently, there are not many publications or current scientific works on the portuguese malacological fauna. However, a magnificent publication from the publisher Verbo stands out, published in 1998 (Conchas Marinhas de Portugal), by Maria Consolado Macedo. The publication was published with the sponsorship of Shell Portuguesa, at the time of the Lisbon World Exhibition - Expo´98.

Scientific classification - Mollusca

Gastropoda - "Gastropods have the greatest numbers of named mollusk species. However, estimates of the total number of gastropod species vary widely, depending on cited sources. The number of gastropod species can be ascertained from estimates of the number of described species of Mollusca with accepted names: about 85,000 (minimum 50,000, maximum 120,000).[9] But an estimate of the total number of Mollusca, including undescribed species, is about 240,000 species.[10] The estimate of 85,000 mollusks includes 24,000 described species of terrestrial gastropods" Source: wikipedia
