The Madeira Islands and Azores Island are two magnificent archipelagos embedded in the abyssal depths of the Atlantic Ocean, which are part of the only two Autonomous Regions of Portugal. Madeira Islands, May of 2006
My second trip...
There were few days we stayed on the island. Four quick days that passed in the blink of an eyes. I took advantage of those few days to explore a part of Madeira, since few days would not give to visit everything with calm. We rented a car and made choices. The eastern extremity (Ponta de São Lourenço), which is the form of an elongated cable and relatively low elevation, extends to the two nearby islets. The place has beautiful coves for diving and bathing, calm turquoise blue waters, which contrast in perfect with the dark color of the volcanic earth of the cliffs. Worth going there... if possible dive.
Madeira International Airport Cristiano Ronaldo
Another of our options was to go to of the north coast, starting from the south and crossing the whole island from one side to another. A good part of the trip, by famous tunnels. The landscape is characterized by spectacular green cliffs, full of flowers and shrubs, that leap over the deep blue sea. It`s worth stopping to eat there, a black swordfish with fried banana...
Note: The approach of the airplane to the runway of Funchal Airport, (Madeira International Airport Cristiano Ronaldo) is a very exciting aeronautical experience, especially if the gusts of wind are strong...
I really liked the northern part of the island, very cut by steep cliffs. The green of the vegetation is of a dazzling magnificence, with some endemic vegetal species of the island. The drive along the old road, next to the cliffs, is divine in a silhouette of vertiginous turns and twists turns, full of stunning landscapes, a pleasure that must be taken into account in careful driving. Worth it.
I did not go to the center of Funchal, or the famous Levadas, or the sister island of Porto Santo. So much pity for me...
Beautiful and magnificent the island of Madeira, leaves us trapped by the charm of the landscape, the blue of the sea. Worth the emotion of landing. For me, feel like to go back there...

My general opinion about the trip...
"Madeira Island is a garden" is one of the most slogan phrases that sells the most "paradisiacal" image of Madeira Island to tourism. If we add the fact that the island is really beautiful and safe for traveling with the family, the plane trip is also very attractive because it is relatively easy and short to do. From mainland Portugal it is just over an hour away and depending on the time of year, the price of the trip is relatively accessible for most people. For those who like travel packages without having to worry about anything, or (plane + hotel) the offer is quite vast. Currently millions of people visit the islands of Madeira and the Azores every year. The islands are an increasingly popular holiday destination for mainland portugueses and for many foreign tourists from around the world.
I'm not a fan of travel packages for various personal reasons, but my trip to Madeira was the result of one of those four-day economic packages (plane + hotel), buying at a discount for those dates of the year that are less popular with tourists. As a result of the discount on the holiday package, the location of the hotel was terrible, the location of the room was terrible and if it weren't for the fact that I had rented a car, it probably would have been a disaster to enjoy those few days that I was in Madeira. That's why I don't like tourist packages, especially with discounts...
Unfortunately I wasn't able to go to some places I would have liked to go, like the Levadas or the Porto Santo Island. I think about going back there again, but without buying tour packages. I like being 100% autonomous. To be free to organize everything related to my travels.

During more than 30 years I have collected and cataloged many marine shells and fossils. Particularly specimens from Portugal. Along all these years, has been a hard work, but full of pleasure.
